How to greet in Thai !

If you wants to start talking to Thai people, a simple greeting can be a great ice-breaker. 

In Thailand for formal and informal situations, Thai people use different greetings depending on who they are talking to.

For more formal situations, Thai people end their greetings in different ways. Women end their sentences with  ‘ค่ะ(kâ)’ when ending an affirmative sentence and ‘คะ(ká)’ when ending a question. However for men, they only use ‘ครับ(kráb)’ to end the sentence

To greet in more formal situations, people usually greet each other with ‘สวัสดี(sà-wàd-dii)’. But, for informal situations, (when talking with the same age person or close friends) they greet each other with ‘หวัดดี(wàd dii) ’ or ‘ดีจ้า(dii jâa)’.

Thai people use ‘สบายดีไหม(sà-baai dii măi)’ to ask how are you, in informal situations, whereas when they are talking to friends, they will say ‘เป็นไงบ้าง(bpen ngai bâang)’. For formal situation and can used in everyday situation Thai people use ‘เป็นยังไงบ้าง(bpen yang ngai bâang)’.

To reply to  ‘สบายดีไหม(sà-baai dii măi)’ OR ‘เป็นไงบ้าง(bpen ngai bâang)’ OR ‘เป็นยังไงบ้าง(bpen yang ngai bâang)’,

you can reply with  ‘สบายดี(sà-baai dii)’ it’s means: “I’m great, thank you”. But, if you not feeling well the answer is ‘ไม่ค่อยดีเลย(mâi kôi dii loiie)’ OR ‘ไม่สบาย’ (mâi sà-baai). If you feel fine, but not at your best, Thai people also say ‘เรื่อย ๆ นะ(rêuuay rêuuay ná)’ which means “so-so”

Finally, at the end of the conversation, you can say ‘สวัสดีค่ะ(sà-wàd-dii kâ)’ or ‘สวัสดีครับ(sà-wàd-dii kráb)’ or ‘ลาก่อนนะ(laa gòn ná)’ to say goodbye.

For more informal situations, they will say ‘ไว้เจอกันนะ(wái jer gan ná)’ which means see you soon! You can also use ‘บ๊ายบาย(báai baai)’.

An example of a situation could be:

A : สวัสดีครับ (sà-wàd-dii kráb)

B : สวัสดีค่ะ (sà-wàd-dii kâ)

A : เป็นยังไงบ้างครับ? (bpen yang ngai bâang kráb)

B : สบายดีค่ะ แล้วคุณเป็นยังไงบ้างคะ? (sà-wàd-dii kâ, láew kun bpen yang ngai bâang ká)

A : เรื่อย ๆ นะครับ (rêuuay rêuuay · ná kráb)

B : ฉันไปก่อนนะคะ ไว้เจอกันค่ะ (chăn bpai gòn ná ká · wái jer gan kâ)

A : ไว้เจอกันนะครับ ลาก่อนครับ (wái jer gan ná kráb · laa gòn kráb)
